Early mornings, and evenings. Work that is physical and, more often, work that is emotional. You will sit with people who are frightened, confused, or grieving, and some of the people you look after will die. Nobody says that in a job advert and everyone finds it out in the first month.
In return the rota is planned around continuity rather than gaps, so you get to know the people you visit. Travel time between visits is paid, not absorbed. And you will not be sent to a house with no idea what you are walking into, because the handover is written down before you go.
